Happy Halloween!

Yes, happy halloween, not happy harvest day or alternative event night...happy halloween! One of my biggest pet peeves the last few years is that no one in the Christian community wants to call halloween by it's real name anymore. It's a Catholic holiday after all, celebrating the eve of All Saints Day, so what are we all so afraid of? I know, people can get all weirded out by the day of the dead or whatever it is, but the actual name, halloween, isn't that. And to top it all off, "harvest festivals" and such are worse - celebrating the harvest by worshiping the land and the earth and whatnot.

Anyways, that's my little thought of the evening, as Jay sits on the front porch handing out candy so that no one will ring the doorbell and wake up Laina who is already conked out at 7 after quite a big day for such a little one. First we had a La Leche League meeting for breastfeeding. Laina didn't gain as much as expected at her 6 month check up, so I wanted to go to this meeting where they weigh the baby, you breastfeed them, then they weigh again to see how many ounces of milk they are getting. Well it turns out my supply is low, as she only got 2 ounces of milk. So I am going to try pumping a lot this week (they want me to pump before every feeding) to try and get my supply up, then next week we will do the weigh, eat, weigh thing again to see if my supply is increasing.

Next we headed to Jay's office so we could have lunch together, along with Jay's coworker, Justin and his wife Lauren and baby Pierce. Lauren let me borrow her pattern to make Laina's costume, and she made a lion costume for Pierce using a pattern from the same set. They were really super cute together but unfortunately I forgot my camera, hence no picture :(

Then after a nap at home we went to the Wildlife Experience museum (which does a trick or treat off the street thing) with my friend Rachel and her 2 kiddos, Aubrey and Ainsley. This time I did remember my camera, though if you check the Heldt's blog you may just see a very similar picture! All 3 of them were more interested in the video of wild gazelles or some other animal rather than the camera. But very cute nonetheless.

**here's the requested pic of my (Jay) work costume: "Unit Man" (Background: Thanks to a challenging site and a rediculous New York associate architect in charge of the overall exterior look, I had to design 126 different unit types for this downtown luxury senior living project. The client has changed their minds and caused wholesale redesigns so often that I've probably actually designed at least 300+ different unit/apartment plans... which is almost like designing 300 little houses for a picky client... hence my total loss of sanity and the unfortunate title of "Unit Man" - for a little perspective, a typical senior living facility usually has about 8-10 different unit types, not 126.)

I might add that I won a prize in the costume contest at work yet again this year as a character that was a rediculous inside joke that nobody on this blog will understand... But it involved a mask made of crown-molding...

This guy at my work came as Larry King with a portable set and everything... he went down to the Rockies rally and ended up getting interviewed in character by the local fox news channel...

Where's the pic of Jays' winning costume? Jenna, you and Laina look so cute! Incidentally, Halloween is short for "all hallows eve" I guess some people think that is too scary to explain to the little ones.

hmm, according to my research, All Hallows Eve is short for All Hallowed Saints Day Eve. I think though it's one of those pagan holidays that the Catholic church gave a new name to, to try and get people to celebrate something godly.

Hmmm... it appears my kids have seen a TV before as they sit mesmorized! Oh well, it got them all in one place at the same time. I love that you made Jay sit outside in 40 degree weather! I covered my doorbell with a bowl and a note to knock.

Okay I know I don't know you (I'm Mike and Rachel's sister-in-law) but I HAD to post an "amen!" to your Halloween/"Harvest" discussion! Oh my goodness, why do people say "I don't celebrate Halloween" when they proceed to carve a pumpkin and dress up in a costume on October 31st?! Isn't that what Halloween is? Don't they know that it began as a pagan celebration of THE HARVEST? Oh how I wanted to post something like this on my own blog, but was too chicken. :)

It does get worse--Kylie's school's "Fall Festival" (not related Halloween at all, so not really a PC change in that name) is apparently no longer allowed to be called the "Fall Festival." I have not yet figured out what the issue was with a carnival in October being called a "Fall Festival," but apparently there is something not PC about it.

Jenna I am SO impressed with the panda costume! You did such a great job. I can't wait to see what you sew next! And jay... you MUST post a photo of your work costume... especially since you won, AND since you posted a photo of your costume last year!

Unfortunately I didn't take a picture.. fortunately somebody else did, so I'll see if I can get one from work. I have to warn you, its not worth any hype whatsoever (I wasn't all that impressed with it). I've had way better costumes in the past, so I was surprised I won anything.

I agree with you, Jenna. We need to call it what it is - a Halloween party and not a "Harvest Festival" or even "Fall Festival". We're dressing in costumes and getting candy on October 31st. Sounds like Halloween to me.

Great job on the panda bear costume. Laina was adorable!
